" The elf rounded a corner. Large oval eyes, shimmering like molten lava, stared back. In the distance stood creatures he had never encountered before. Taller than average humans, they possessed muscular builds that were fortified with tough-looking plates that resembled body armour. Set upon their broad shoulders were scaly faces with slithered nostrils, teeth that cured outwards from their wide mouths. Their forked tongues flicked as they eyed Imrilith warily, waiting for the first sign of movement.
Imrilith ducked instinctively as he heard the sound of air rushing past him. A spear ricocheted off the corner, taking out a huge chunk of granite wall. With a snarl, he raised his hands, muttering several incantations in a long string that would have sounded like gibberish to a person unfamiliar with the magical arts. White bolts shot towards the lizardmen as he raised his rapiers, preparing to finish them off.
To his amazement, his lightning bolts did not even singe them. With their wickedly curved, serrated-edged blades they attacked, one coming at him with an overhead chop, the other in a waist-high slash. Dren and Rild arrived in time to see him turn aside both blades before jumping awkwardly to avoid the third blade. Crimson and Scarlet yelled a concordant battle cry as Imrilith whirled around a lizardman and struck with both blades simultaneously. Snarling, the reptilian creatures fell back.
Dren and Rild, arriving beside Imrilith, stood helpless as the battle unfolded before them. They watched the sunlight play off the gleaming blades and the shimmering scales, enthralled by the display of expert swordsmanship. Imrilith leapt back yet again. He had not been able to find a single weakness upon which he could capitalise. It was all he could do to hold these monsters back, and perhaps give the two boys a chance to get to Dunraven’s mansion.
"Get to the mayor's house!" Imrilith shouted. "The rest will be there. I'll take care of this myself." Imrilith turned gracefully back to the remaining foe.
The lizardman hissed in rage and struck, but its blade hit only air as the nimble elf moved aside, the serrated edge passing within an inch of his fine mesh armour.
Not only had his foes shown exceptional swordsmanship, they had shown exceptional coordination in their attacks or defence. All three of them lifted their swords to their chests before pointing the blades directly at him. Imrilith decided it was a sign of respect for the opponent. He nodded in acknowledgement and followed suit.
Then the battle began anew. "
